The second copper is the one that embarrasses us

A heroic first bite loves a single paint job. Re-washing after the ram is how we catch the travel that went too far, or the travel that did not go far enough while the golfer was already putting the headcover back on.

The first copper is a census. It tells us which end of the sole has been paying taxes. The ram then travels a bite. If we stopped there, we would be guessing that the bite matched the census. Guessing is how Suite 9 would become a garage with better lighting. The second wash is the audit. Audits are not glamorous. They are why hosels survive the week.

We have over-rammed. We will say that in print. A 6-iron with a loud heel moon took a bite that looked righteous on the clamp gauge and then printed a toe scuff on the next three swings. The golfer was already smiling. The second copper was not smiling. We took a smaller bite back. The ticket shows both travels. Paper that only shows the ending stamp is how shops hide a wobble. We would rather look indecisive on paper than be famous for a hosel that now leaks the other way at East Bay.

Under-ramming is the quieter failure. The second wash still shows a heel moon, smaller, and the golfer is tired, and the pew is still a pew. It is tempting to call it close enough. Close enough is how you get a phone call in July. We either take another small bite or we write “return after three canyon rounds” and we mean it. Degrees are not a mood. Fatigue is a mood. We do not ram tired moods.

Graphite complicates the second wash because the first bite may spring back a hair after it sits. We re-measure, we re-paint, we wait a few minutes that feel like an insult to a Saturday schedule. The insult is cheaper than a crack. Cast cavities with old garage creases do not get a second wash because they do not get a first ram. The clipboard already said no. Paint-only still includes two photographs so the refusal has evidence.

Winter indoor air dries slower. We wait anyway. A smear of wet copper is not a witness, it is a finger painting. Reed will not photograph wet. Inez will not archive wet. Nyla will not ram based on wet. If that puts you past the last slot, we will not squeeze. We will book you into the next open ram day. The canyon will still be there. Your hosel will still be there. A rushed second wash is how the first wash becomes trivia.

People ask whether the second paint is a way to pad the hour. Look at the fare table. The iron family is $168 whether we wash twice or, in a stubborn case, three times. We are not a salon. We are a room with a ram and a refusal list. The extra wash is for us. It keeps us from believing our own clamp gauge when the dirt has a better argument.

If you want to watch, stand on the pew side for both washes. The second one is less cinematic. That is the one that matters. Bring the shoes. Leave the “just crank it” sentence in the car. The copper will take two votes. We will listen to both.
