Skip the ticket chrome, land on the ram
Lie Press Provo canyon shop

The room

Suite 9 is a ram, not a showroom

The press lives on a slab that used to be a print shop. You can still see the old ticket-window ledge. We kept the ledge. We replaced the press with a canyon-floor lie machine that only moves after copper paint has voted.

Floor

From the buzzer to the clamp

You come in off University Avenue, past the sandstone stair, and hit the Suite 9 buzzer. The first thing you see is not a wall of heads. It is a rack of tickets from last week, a lie board with yesterday’s copper still drying, and the ram standing like a short piece of industrial furniture. The waiting bench is a church pew we found in Springville. It is not comfortable. That is the point.

Reed keeps the paint tins on a copper tray so nobody confuses them with the coffee. Inez keeps a camera on a clamp for the shots we need to argue with later. Nyla keeps a refusal clipboard for heads that have already been monkeyed with until the hosel is a rumor.

Machine

The ram travels in bites, not speeches

We do not talk about a vise as if it were a personality. The clamp holds the hosel. The ram travels. Degrees are not a mood. We mark the starting stamp, we travel a bite, we re-measure, we re-paint. If graphite complains, we stop. If a cast cavity already has a crease from somebody’s garage, we write “no” on the ticket and send the bag home with its dignity.

The lie board is a piece of firm composite, not a fluffy mat that forgives a toe. Provo golfers who only ever hit indoors will be offended by how honest it is. That offense is useful. June on Rock Canyon will be ruder.

Light

Winter daylight in the canyon is a liar too

From November through March the shop runs on the overheads because the Wasatch steals the afternoon. We still paint. We still hit. We just refuse to pretend a winter mat is June turf. If you only play heated bays until April, say so. We will bias the ticket toward the surface you actually see, and we will write that bias in ink so a future visit cannot gaslight you.

From April on, the sandstone across the street throws a warm bounce onto the board. That is pretty. It is not a fitting variable. The variable is whether your sole is kissing heel, toe, or the middle of the story. Pretty light does not get a column on the ticket.

Refusal list

Heads we will not ram

  • Hosels that already show a crease from a prior garage adventure
  • Certain hollow drivers whose lie is a marketing number, not a bendable fact
  • Junior sets with walls too thin for even a polite bite
  • Anything a player asks us to “just crank three degrees” without paint
